Gazette Status

Gazette Status: How to check name change Gazette status?

Gazette status can be checked based on whether you’ve applied through the State or Central Government Gazette. The first thing to know is where you’ve submitted the application for a name change Gazette status check.

You can check the application status via the state’s official Gazette or printing department portal if you applied through the State Gazette. A different process is available for the Central Gazette of India for a name change.

Although the Government of India’s Gazette portal allows you to search published Gazettes, the applicant should not expect the same on most states’ portals. This is why we’ve created this guide to help you check Gazette Status effectively.

How to Check Name Change Gazette Status?

Once you’re done with the Gazette process and it’s time to track your Gazette publication, 2 main possibilities are available here:

  1. State Gazette
  2. Central Gazette of India

The appropriate method for checking the application depends on which option you’ve selected. Let’s discuss both available options one by one.

Gazette Status for State Gazette

Several Indian states offer their own Gazette system. Although some states offer online application status tracking, others allow the applicant to search directly from the published Gazette.

Top state Gazette portals and official pages:

State   Official portal  How to check
Maharashtra  Rajputra status Check Rajputra status for change in name, date of birth, or religion applications
Uttar Pradesh  UP eGazette Log in and check status details
Bihar  Bihar eGazette Search published Gazette & notifications
Kerala  Kerala COMPOSE e-Gazette Use citizen search or status tracking
Tamil Nadu Tamil Nadu Gazette Publications Check Gazette issues
Odisha  Odisha eGazette Search published Gazettes
Haryana  Haryana e-Gazette Search status
Telangana  Telangana Gazette Search the state’s digital Gazette repository
Punjab  Punjab eGazette Ideal for checking the Gazette publication
Karnataka  Karnataka Gazette information Check official Gazette publication

The application status facility differs from state to state. For example, the Maharashtra government offers a dedicated Rajpatra Status section with a category for Change in Name or Date of Birth or Religion. Status tracking for Gazette and printing requests is also available at Kerala’s COMPOSE portal.

If your state portal isn’t available in the table, the official State Gazette directory of the Government of India can be used to find the relevant state Gazette website.

Gazette Status: 4 Steps to check name change gazette status by State

Step 1: Visit the official state Gazette portal

You must first visit the department’s official website responsible for Gazette publication in your state. Avoid depending on the 3rd party website to check the application status. It’s best to use the government portal whenever possible.

Step 2: Look for the status or application section

Name Change Gazette Status

You may see these options based on your state:

  • Application status
  • Check status
  • Citizen service search
  • Track application
  • My application
  • Gazette status

Select the relevant option based on your state website.

Step 3: Enter your application details

One or more of the following details may be needed to check the application status:

  • Application number
  • Registration no.
  • Reference no.
  • Mobile no.
  • User ID
  • Password
  • Other details

Step 4: Check whether the notification has been published

You can easily download or view the Gazette notification from the same portal if your application has been processed and published. For example, applicants living in UP can use the UP eGazette system for all application-related services. The same process is to be followed by people living in Rajasthan, Karnataka, Telangana, Odisha or any other state.

How to Check Central Name Change Gazette Status?

The situation is a little different from the state Gazette Status check if you’ve applied through the Department of Publication, Government of India, for a name change in the Gazette of India.

The Department of Publication is responsible for publishing Gazette notifications. Many applicants often receive an application number & track the file online as with normal government services. The process, however, doesn’t work the same way for the physical name-change submissions.

The Central Gazette website for the regular applicant-facing online tracking system is not available. This means that you cannot enter a tracking number and see a live file status for a physical name-change application.

Name Change Gazette Status Tracking

Users can mainly use the official website to search and access published Gazette issues. A list of published Gazettes is only available at the Gazette Directory. It can be searched by category, part and section, and year.

Gazette Status of Central Gazette

If You Submitted Your Application in Person

You should start checking the Weekly Gazette from around the third week after submitting Central Gazette name-change documents.

Though the Gazette of India publishes weekly issues, a name change notice usually appears in Part IV. Name change and related declarations published in Part IV usually appear in recent Gazette of India issues.

You can check the eGazette of India website to find the Weekly Gazette publications.

When should you start checking?

  • Week 1 is usually ideal for waiting for processing.
  • You may need to start checking the Weekly Gazette from Week 3
  • Keep checking each weekly issue from Week 3 to Week 5
  • Further action may be needed after 5 weeks if your name doesn’t appear in the notification

The exact publication time may differ. You should therefore not believe that your application has been rejected if your name doesn’t appear in the initial weeks.

How to Search Your Name in the Central Gazette

Open https://egazette.gov.in/

  1. Navigate to Gazette Directory section and the Select Gazette Category Weekly, Part 4, Select year and then hit Submit button.
  2. It will show you list of all the published gazettes.
  3. Now you have to click and download the latest Gazette Pdf.
  4. You must immediately open the Pdf file and search for your name once the relevant Weekly Gazette is available.
  5. It would be best to search for your old or new name, father’s name, or other identifying details to find your notification. It is useful because the new name may not be sufficient to quickly find your notice.
  6. Everyone should only use the official eGazette website.

What if my name is not found?

No need to panic if your notice is not available in the first weekly issue because the publication process may take time. You should keep checking the subsequent Weekly Gazette issues.

There may be an issue with a document or application if your notification still has not appeared in the weekly publication. Applicants may have to wait for the communication related to an objection or deficiency.

The applicant must address the objection & complete the required process before publication can proceed after receiving the objection letter.

Central Name Change Gazette Status for Applications Sent by Courier or Post

Extra time is needed for reaching the department and entering the processing cycle if you submitted a Central Gazette name-change application by courier or post.

You must therefore start checking the weekly Gazette from around the 4th week in this situation. A real checking period is:

  • Week 1 to Week 3 is needed for delivery & processing
  • Start checking Weekly Gazette issues for week 4
  • Keep checking every relevant weekly issue from week 4 to week 8
  • You should investigate whether an objection or other issue has been raised after Week 8

Publication timeline may differ again. Missing your name from the notification doesn’t mean that the application has failed.

What If My Central Name Change Gazette Is Not Published?

There may be several possibilities if your Name Change Gazette doesn’t appear in the weekly publication after waiting for several weeks.

There are a few chances that your application keeps staying in processing even after several weeks. An issue may also be raised with the documents submitted with the application.

An objection may delay the publication in most cases. You may also receive the objection letter where you may find details related to the rejection. Those issues must be fixed later.

Don’t assume that delayed publication means rejection.

Central Gazette Status: In-Person vs Courier Submission

Submission method  Time to start checking  Suggested period to check
In person  Around 3rd week  Approximately 3 to more than 5 weeks
Sent by post Around 4th week Approximately 4 to more than 8 weeks

These are not the guaranteed government processing deadlines. Although the Weekly Gazette publications by date and Gazette ID are present on the official eGazette website, the Gazette Directory offers access to published issues.

Where to Check the Published Central Gazette?

The official Gazette of India website can be used to find published issues.

Information & the official guidelines related to the change-of-name services can be checked on the Department of Publication website. It also offers official guidelines for adult or major name changes, Religion change, minor name changes, change of gender, adoption, marksheet name corrections and other public notices.
